Liveblog of a Product Announcement

I’ve decided to try something new. We’re going to post a liveblog of all the stuff going on behind-the-scenes when announcing a new product.

The catch is, we’re not actually going to talk about the product. Stay tuned at 10 AM for that.

So, if you think this is all easy… take a seat. Members of the team are all over, some waking up, and some I’ve sent to bed. Rolling out a product during CTIA isn’t easy… but it’s also rewarding.

It’s 3:30 AM. What’s left to do? Well…

Export the collateral (logos, images, etc) for publishing, and press-quality assets (TIFFs)
Finish the product page
Put the finishing touches on the waiting list… and test it several times over…
Proofread the press release
Set up the press release to go out on the wires

Put the new Press Room online
Wrap up any lingering news for the day
Phase 3: Profit!

3:45 AM Did we mention that the hotel Wi-Fi has been utterly horrible? It will not let us upload (not even a HTTP/PHP POST) on Intel-based Macs to our server. So, everything has to flow through the one netbook on-site.

Special thanks to Cox Communications for using ancient, incompatible Wi-Fi gear… great job guys.

That means that an Acer Aspire One is fueling all of this onto the web. And yes, we’re really glad we brought it.

4:30 AM The logos that we were using in the press material weren’t alpha-channeled. And, I came up with the idea of having the collateral in white-on-black as well as the standard black-on-white.

6:20 AMThings are starting to come together. Product page is done. On to the waiting list…

6:48 AM Sprint to the rescue. While Sprint had crudded out, alongside Verizon when we landed… things appear to be running smoothly for Day 2 of CTIA. We’re seeing excellent signal, so I suspect Sprint deployed a COW.

Our in-room Wi-Fi (again, thanks for nothing Cox) has completely failed. And Verizon isn’t much better.

6:57 AM Just posted on the PhoneNews.com Blog that CTIA photos are delayed until later today.

7:19 AM Everything is good to go. We’ll be doing a little bit of mopping up after CTIA today. But, the show is ready to go on. See you at 10 AM.
