Dashboard Suggestion: Get Safari to Plug It

Unfortunately, this suggestion may have to wait for a major upgrade to Mac OS X, I hope though that it doesn’t.

To push RSS, developers got together and designed something called a “link rel”, which is a line of code telling the internet where the RSS feed is for a web page. The user typically sees this on their web browser’s address bar as an RSS button (or, in the case of IE, on the RSS button right below the address bar).

So, as I was walking through Macworld, it hit me… why not do the same thing with Dashboard widgets!? Have a button on the address bar, right next to the RSS button, to let users know that the site has a Dashboard widget.

For security purposes, I would encourage Apple to implement this to redirect to an html page, the download page for the widget (for security purposes). This could be on Apple.com’s Dashboard Gallery, or, on the web site itself. Either way, this is something Apple should really implement to encourage web sites to deploy Dashboard widgets.
