A long time ago, Acer bought Gateway. And, they’ve been effectively rebading Acer models as Gateways for awhile now.
So, I was interested in updating my Gateway EC1803u, which I bought from TigerDirect. My only complaint about the laptop thus far, had been the monumental effort I’ve had to undergo to get my Bing cashback… more on that later… if I don’t ultimately get the cashback in question.
I was surprised to find that there aren’t any BIOS updates. I know Intel had updated the opcode for the built-in GMA4500MHD graphics chipset. So, I asked my good friend if there was any update out there.
And, it turns out there is, for the original Acer model, the Acer Aspire 1410. And, it turns out, you can update the Gateway EC1803u with the Aspire 1410’s BIOS. In fact, the process went perfectly.
I realize Gateway is now aimed at less-technical users (well, it always has been aimed at less-technical users). But, bargain hunters and less-technical users alike deserve BIOS updates. So, please, Acer, give gateway owners the same BIOS treatment. This is apparently an issue with many Gateway models these days, according to posters on countless forums that same said friend pulled up during my search.
